About Fulbright Grants

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946 by U.S. Congress, is named for Senator J. William Fulbright and was created to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges. It is designed to give opportunities for personal and career development and international experience. Most awards are for one academic year.

There are two main types of traditional Fulbright Awards for the U.S. Student Program and other special Fulbright Awards:

  1. Study/Research Grants: Applicants propose and design their own programs. Projects may include university coursework, independent research, special projects in the creative or performing arts, or a combination.
  2. English Teaching Assistantships (ETA): The Fulbright places ETA recipients in classrooms in the host country to provide assistance to the local English teachers.
