Japanese Government (MEXT) Graduate/Research Student Scholarship Program

Scholarships to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as research students (either non-degree or degree students).

Eligibility

International students - If you are a non-U.S. citizen contact the Embassy of Japan of the country in which you hold citizenship for information on how to apply. Only U.S. citizens who live in Northern California and Nevada are eligible to apply through the San Francisco consulate. U.S. citizens residing in other states should apply to the Japanese consulate responsible for their state. 

Eligibility Requirements for Applicants through the SF consulate: 

  • Applicants must hold US citizenship. (Applicants who hold Japanese nationality at the time of application are not eligible.)
  • Applicants must be under 35 years old.
  • Applicants must be a university graduate (at the time of participation on the program) or have completed 16 years of school education (See "QUALIFICATIONS AND CONDITION" on the Application Guidelines for more details.)
  • Applicants should be able to arrive in Japan within two weeks of the date set by the receiving university for the beginning of the semester (in principle in September or October. See official for more details.)
  • Applicants must apply in their current field of study or had previously studied as an undergraduate.

About the Japanese Government (MEXT) Graduate/Research Student Scholarship Program

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to international students (including U.S. students) who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as research students (either non-degree or degree students) under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program. The aim is to foster human resources that will become bridges of friendship between the grantee’s country and Japan through study in Japan and will contribute to the development of both countries and the wider world.

Amount Awarded

  • 143,000 yen (Research Students (non-regular students))
  • 144,000 yen (regular students in Master’s courses or professional graduate courses)
  • 145,000 yen (regular students in doctoral courses) 

per month

Application Process

The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program does not have a campus process.

Applications submitted by the respective national deadline will be screened.

Campus Application Deadline

No campus process.

National Application Deadline

The national deadline for the MEXT Graduate/Research Student Scholarship is usually in early June.
