Japanese Government Scholarship for Japanese Studies
One-year scholarships for undergraduates to study in Japan.
Eligibility
Eligibility Requirements for Applicants through the SF consulate:
- Applicants must hold US citizenship. (Applicants who hold Japanese nationality at the time of application are not eligible.)
- Applicants must have been born on or after April 1, 2006.
- Applicants must be a current undergraduate student majoring in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese culture at a non-Japanese university.
- Applicants must have studied Japanese studies at a university for a total period of one year or more as of Sept. 1 2024.
- Applicants must have Japanese language ability sufficient for receiving education at a Japanese university in Japan.
- Applicants must arrive in Japan within two weeks before the first day of the study course set by the university (usually September or October).
About the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Japanese Studies
The Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is now offering one-year scholarships to study in Japan for currently enrolled undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language, Japanese affairs, or Japanese culture. This is a fully funded scholarship which covers academic fees, a monthly living stipend and a round trip ticket.

Application Process
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program does not have a campus process.
Applications submitted by the respective national deadline will be screened.
Campus Application Deadline
No campus process.
National Application Deadline
The national deadline for the MEXT One Year Scholarship for Japanese Studies is usually in early February.
